At the Nokomis Regional High
School in Newport, Maine, cadets enrolled in Army JROTC do not shout orders and do drills...everyday. The JROTC is about learning leadership skills and how to become a leader, because it's not just about telling subordinates what to do but how to lead and guide them. Being a leader means respecting individuals and earning their respect towards you. A good, strong leader makes sure that their subordinates come first. In the Army JROTC, the definition of leadership is, "The ability to influence subordinates in order to complete a mission or task." This means that as a leader you need be able to get your subordinates to follow you to complete a mission or task. The JROTC is about learning leadership skills and how to become a leader.
Of course, you learn more than just about becoming a leader. You learn about the ranks in the Army, how to read maps and there are even teams you can join. These teams include the following: Drill Team, Raiders, Exhibition, Color Guard, and Honor Guard. Like sports, you have to try out for each team, except for Honor Guard, which you are chosen for depending on an individuals grades. If you have any failing grades, then you would have to bring them up before you could be eligible for Honor Guard.
